The Super Hero Culture

Among the notable attributes of American Society is the prevalence of the “Superhero Culture”. This is manifested in the affinity for fictitious characters with superhuman abilities. This socio – cultural constructs found in comics, video games and other like material go on adventures and fight those who are against what is good, just, noble and humanistic. They are not just of a uniform mold but are as varied as a society itself. Like any community these personas, though imaginary are an important externality in terms of Social Interaction.

In Social Interaction, an externality must be shared by several individuals in society. This may be a tangible or intangible so long as it facilitates the socio – personal interchange. The American society in whole or in part share attributes with this non – real persons. These fictional individuals served as tangible modes through which Social Interaction could viably happen. However, this important cultural phenomenon is not purely founded on affinity for them as an externality. They also are significant repositories of values. Fighting for justice, using individual ingenuity to solve problems and defending the oppressed are some of these ideals.

Some argue that the “Superhero Culture” as an integral part of social dynamics, such as social interaction. Its detractors contend that this becomes the source of radical American war bravado. Some say that the warmongering of this society is brought about by a society interacting through these imaginary personas. However, this cannot be validly appreciated. Cultural nuances such as having externalities of heroes fighting evil and these evils are the enemies of the United States. Every culture has their own idea of what is evil and what they stand for.

Social Interaction is most effective when it is through symbols that are provocative, appealing and culturally expressive. Any cultural icons that exist not as real individuals but as representations of values and unique communal attributes better facilitate the shared interchange of individual expression in the social dimension. The level of mythos and relevance they take on is such that they are seen not just characters in comic books, animated shows and fiction in general. They are not that to the community’s psyche.

More importantly for Social Interaction to have a lasting imprint in terms of the individuals in society, they have to hold considerable weight. Ideas of moral responsibility, vigilance to uphold justice and doing what is right regardless of the cost are best expressed and integrated into members of society not with mere words or written text. They are best ingrained through symbols and appealing representations – superheroes.

For Social Interaction, Batman, Green Lantern, and Charles Xavier make the whole phenomena easy and even insightful. These characters are meant to reflect the best of human nature and the reality of the struggle to be better. This in turn is the foundation of lasting social development.

Western Culture

Cultures have been generally labeled as eastern or western depending on which part of the globe that particular culture is, if it is in the east it came to be known as eastern culture, and similarly for western culture. But there is a lot of difference between various cultures as a particular culture consists of customs, ideas, values and many other traits, which are different for different cultures. Western culture has been a source of constant inspiration for aspiration, and people around the world have used the terms western culture and modernization interchangeably.

The history of western culture is replete with many events that have influenced it and shaped its present form and structure. Important among them (and responsible for the present European version of western culture) is it’s development at the hands of the Greeks, its expansion by the Romans, and then further enrichment by the Europeans.

History

The Greeks developed many faculties like art, literature, politics, and architecture around the time of Jesus Christ, but with the defeat at the hands of Romans at that time everything came under their control. For around the next 500 years the Romans continued to develop the culture, keeping intact the work done by the Greeks. The Latin and Greek languages flourished under the Romans. But under the Romans democracy was not given the status, it enjoyed during the Greeks.

With the downfall of the Roman Empire everything about the Greco-Roman culture, arts and science was lost. The kings of different regions in Europe waged a war among themselves and there was political instability all over. The advent of Roman Catholicism helped to stabilize the tensions and preserved art, literature, and science through the many Churches, seminaries, and cathedrals at a time when it was hard to preserve them.

The most vital and long lasting effects occurred, in the late Middle Ages, during Renaissance, which started in the city of Florence; and from there spread to the rest of Europe, when different disciplines were encouraged like literature, painting, art, science, religion, philosophy etc. It led to total reformation and redevelopment. This, in turn, had many effects on the more creative and intellectual fields, such as technology, medical advancement, and scientific capability.

Age of Enlightenment

The Enlightenment period focused on reasoning as the fountainhead for all validity and authority. It depended more on science and reasoning to answer the questions of the people. It advocated questioning of conventional wisdom, beliefs and traditions which were not based on some strong foundations of rationality and scientific intellectual. The Enlightenment was a source of inspiration for many revolutions in the West; it resulted in the success of the American Revolution, and the Atlantic Revolution.

Modern Aspect

Much of the present form of Western culture has been derived from the culture of the past. The western culture today is not limited to the European countries, it includes even those where there was colonization and large-scale European settlement. The western culture today is characterized by its lifestyle, democratic principles and values, it is less influenced by religion, technological and medical advancements and multiculturalism, which make it an inspiration for people around the world.

How Our Chinese Culture Shapes Us to Who We Are

Asian men need to develop their own culture. The west has always dominated the world with their inventions and meanwhile Chinese have had 100 years taken away from them thanks to Mao’s cultural revolution. Since then it has been traditional of the Asian mindset not to challenge authority and not ‘reinvent the wheel.’ Meanwhile, western culture has thrived on borrowing the best from all other cultures and calling it their own.

In an age we live in now where China is becoming the 2nd largest superpower and overshadowing the west, a new cultural development is important.

We live in an age which has adopted the western mindset of borrowing and stealing and appropriation, and even mimicking. However the importance of creating a strong identity and powerful cultural dominance is important for China. One that can be expressed through the basics of what we have – language and race.

As already mentioned in this digital age it’s so easy to copy and mimic what is out there but for something that is profound and not so easily consumed – this is what a great culture should be. Like Chinese language, Chinese culture should be earned and enjoyed like a fine Chinese dish, and contemplated like good wine.

Ironically to create a new culture, Chinese need to move away from the mass consumption culture that currently floods the ‘global world’ that we know it as. Globalism is a good thing but the speed at which it has developed has affected and disabled everyone, and not even given us time to digest and appreciate.

When Chinese men can create a new culture, we can move forward to creating our new identity. One that is respected and attractive to all.

Chinese men, all around the globe need to take the time and patience to develop as artists and once they have reached a level of critical thinking then pursue the goal of becoming leaders. Leaders by its truest definition are people of vision who see a way that is clearer than other ways that have been established. New ways are developed because of the risk taken to develop those new ways.

Those risks that are taken have their own rewards. But they must be earned .
