Middle Eastern Food – Dreamy Home Made Sweets
Most people who are not familiar with Middle Eastern food may not think of home made sweets as being an important part of the cuisine. However, there are some of these delicacies that are quite decadent and sure to please just about anyone’s sweet tooth. Below, are some of the dessert favorites that you can find in a good Turkish restaurant.
One of the most common home made sweets that you will find in Middle Eastern food is Baklava. This is a flaky pastry that is filled with crushed walnuts. The walnuts are soaked in a special syrup and the results is simply scrumptious. This is a common holiday favorite and for many people, the ultimate dessert.
Turkish Delight or lokum is a jellied candy made with rose water. This tasty confection is coated in a fully sugar icing. Originally made for royal palettes only, this sweetmeat is now enjoyed all over the Middle East and around the world. It is often filled with exotic nuts or honey, but the pale, blush pink color from the rose water is still the most common.
One of the most popular home made sweets in Middle Eastern food is halva or helva. Depending on where you are in the Middle East, you will undoubtedly find that this recipe varies from region to region. It’s a sweet confection and is usually served with strong tea or coffee. It is often found garnished with pistachios or covered in chocolate.
Sutlac is a traditional Turkish style rice pudding. This Middle Eastern food was also designed for ancient royal families in the Ottoman Empire. Today, it may be found flavored with rose water, but many of the newer restaurants do not include this ingredients. It’s worth it to try it with the light rose flavoring when you can find it. Traditionally, sutlac is served cold with a little bit of cinnamon sprinkled on the top. However, there are some that prefer it baked or broiled first.
Many of these home made sweets require special cooking techniques, so it really becomes an art form for many people. Middle Eastern food is quite flavorful, making use of a wide range of spices and ingredients. These incredibly tasty sweets are very common and you can find stores dedicated to nothing else in many of the Middle Eastern cities. Some of these sweets have roots in India, with the food introduced thousands of years ago from traders on the Silk Road.
The internet is full of recipes for Middle Eastern food, but home made sweets should also be enjoyed by someone who truly understands how to create these masterpieces of flavor. A Turkish restaurant is often how many people are introduced to the food of this region of the world and it’s a great way to find your favorite home made sweets of this cuisine. Be prepared, though. You may want to try just about every dessert on the menu!
